Seriously. WD-40 is mostly a mix of baby oil, Vaseline, and the goop inside homemade lava lamps.
WD-40 contains an abundance of alkanes—hydrocarbons that match the formula CxH2x+2, usually in a long, zigzagging chain. This one, C10H22, which is also a common ingredient of gasoline, helps WD-40 remain a liquid at cold temperatures. Decane doesn't freeze until around -21 degrees Fahrenheit.
Another alkane. One reason these molecules are so handy here: Their hydrogen atoms don't hold a charge, so they can't connect to the hydrogen or oxygen in water, which makes alkanes water-repellent. WD-40, after all, stands for "water displacement, 40th attempt."
Tridecane and Undecane
Freeze-resistant? Check. Water- repellent? Check. Contains an alkane that is the major product of the red-banded stinkbug's scent gland? Check! Many alkanes are naturally produced by living creatures. Undecane, part of the pheromone trail left by cockroaches and ants, is present.
Another alkane! Zzzzzz.
Here's the thing: This stuff (C12H12) comes in 10 forms, called isomers. One of them is a harmless hormone given off by potatoes. Another is used in high-performance engineering plastics. Our analysis can't determine which ones are present here, but if you're using it as a solvent, as is likely the case with WD-40, they all work just fine.
That cyclo prefix means that unlike standard alkanes, which come in chains, this one's a ring. The shape gives cycloalkanes a higher melting point. And huffing them will knock you out cold. (Or so we're told.)
The WD-40 company claims that by using this gas as a propellant, it avoids using smaller gaseous alkanes (possibly butane and propane), which can be hazardous to the environment. As if CO2 isn't. THE FIVE BASIC FUNCTIONS:
LUBRICATES: WD-40's lubricating ingredients are widely dispersed and hold firmly to all moving parts.
CLEANS: WD-40 gets under dirt, grime and grease to clean. It also dissolves adhesives, allowing easy removal of labels, tape, stickers, and excess bonding material.
PROTECTS: WD-40 protects metal surfaces with corrosion-resistant ingredients to shield against moisture and other corrosive elements.
PENETRATES: WD-40 loosens rust-to-metal bonds and frees stuck, frozen or rusted metal parts.
DISPLACES MOISTURE: Because WD-40 displaces moisture, it quickly dries out electrical systems to eliminate moisture-induced short circuits.

What a Fish story!
Myth: WD-40 contains fish oil.
Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish. Sorry Charlie®, it just ain’t so.
WD-40 Company has taken steps to respect and conserve the environment, and encourages its users to do the same. While WD-40 can be used to help protect fishing equipment from rust and corrosion, WD-40 Company does not recommend using WD-40 to attract fish.

I ja sam, kao i mnogi od vas, vjerujem, koristio WD 40 za čišćenje i podmazivanje lanca bicikla. Što bas i nije najsretnije riješenje za lanac. Naime WD je odlično sredstvo za čišćenje i odmaščivanje, ali nije bas neki lubrikant, tako da dosta brzo isuši lanac i ostavlja ga podložnijim hrđanju. Nakon korištenja WD-a lanac bi trebalo dobro osušiti i dobro ga nauljiti nekim uljem baš za lance. Ja sam znao nakon WD-a i po dva-tri puta nauljiti lanac pa ga obrisati sa cistom krpum da izvuce sve zaostale kapljice WD-a između karika lanca da ne hrđa...Why WD-40 is Bad for Your Bike Chain:
Near the end of last week’s tutorial, I mentioned that WD-40 should never be used as a chain lubricant. Quite a few people wanted to know what I meant by that. Here’s an explanation.
WD-40 was developed by the military in the 50s as a rust preventative solvent and de-greaser to protect missile parts. It quickly became a household item when people discovered it had thousands of other uses as a cleaner, rust-prevention agent, squeak-stopper and more. It also works wonders as a light lubricant on small items like hinges, locks, and toys.
Bicycle chains, on the other hand, are far too heavy and fast-moving for the lubricating power of WD-40 to have any effect at all. As a matter of fact, WD-40 will actually strip away any existing lubricant and leave your drivetrain dry – metal on metal. Basically, spraying this stuff on your chain is worse than using no lubricant at all!
Obviously, I strongly recommend using chain oil purchased from your local bike shop. Just go down there and ask them for regular waterproof chain oil. It shouldn’t be any more than 10 or 12 bucks, and it’s the best thing you can buy for your bike. My personal favorite is Cross Country, but if you want the Caviar, you can get quality oils from companies like Phil Wood. We’ll talk more about lubricants later…

I keep hearing that the use of WD40 on firearms is a bad idea. Not even to prevent rust during longterm storage. Most Machinists, mechanics and gunsmiths seem to reject it. It's only atributes seem to be ease of use and availability. Its cost are higher compared to other, more effective lubes.
Some say that a kerosene and automatic trans fluid mix is a better penetrant.
I also hear that chainsaw bar lube or motorcycle chain lube is a better general purpose lubicant due to its superior clingability and resistance to heat.

Iz iskustva puno bolji se pokazao RenCo-ov Odvijač sprej koji ne isušuje kao WD, i za razliku od njega zaista podmazuje (ostane fini masni sloj nakon sprejanja), te puno brze i efikasnije nagriza hrđu. Ukratko, mislim da je WD pregazilo vrijeme i tehnologija i da danas ima puno boljih i učinkovitijih proizvoda.
